Artist: 3RD MACHINE
Album: Urban Madness
Year: 2008
3rd Machine is a Dutch band, already existing from the year 2000, but got its real start in 2005. It's first demo 'Saraphin' came out that very same year, after which this band decided to fully concentrate on industrial metal. This band, these days existing out of five people, says to be influenced by bands such as Paradise Lost, Opeth, Queensryche and Rammstein - which should stand for an interesting mix of different styles. Their currently latest demo, called 'Urban Madness', came out in 2008.
The EP kicks off with the title track, 'Urban Madness'. It contains powerful drumming, symphonic keylines and diverse clean and brutal vocal lines. The riffing is decent, and gets more powerful during the more uptempo parts of this track. The next track is named '3rd Machine'. It has a powerful opening, to be followed by uptempo music with raw vocal lines. This track is uptempo overall, although it includes more quiet parts too (including an ambient intermezzo!). The symphonic outro, accompanied by clean vocal lines, is surprisingly beautiful. It floats over in the final track of the release, 'Core of the Machine'. Opening with the same sensitivity '3rd Machine' ended, this track continues with more midtempo and symphonic metal. This track is a nearly fully instrumental outro for this release.
Although I must admit that I never heard of 3rd Machine before, it turns out to be a real positive surprise for me. Musically all the song are intelligently constructed, and shows a certain degree of experimentality. This EP reminds me of bands such as Fear Factory (including the vocal lines - which is a compliment!), Dagoba and sometimes even Conteched as well, while the more symphonic parts strongly remind me of French industrial (death) metal formation Malmonde. 3rd Machine gives you a little bit of everything, resulting in a release on which you cannot deny the pure quality. According to the MySpace page, 2009 might bring us 3rd Machine's debut album - I'm more than ready for it already!
