Artist: DEADCELL
Album: Black Rooster
Year: 2009
DeadCell from Eindhoven, The Netherlands has turned themselves into the leading industrial metal band of its native country within pretty short time. After the release of their 'The Massacre' and 'State of Fear' albums the band made shared the stage with bands such as Hanzel Und Gretyl, Gothminister, The Cruxshadows, MortIIs and Punish Yourself and played on highly acclaimed festivals such as Ruigoord, Occultfest and Summer Darkness. Only one year after the 'State of Fear' album this band already presents its follow-up named 'Black Rooster' (talking about workaholicism, indeed...).
After the intro, the album kicks off with 'The New Plague'. It's a nicely flowing midtempo industrial metal track with Rammstein alike riffing and (small) touches of wave. The intermezzo with the guitarsolo is also worth mentioning. 'Deus Ex Machina' is a bit more uptempo and comes with very tight riffing, bashing drums and recogniseable vocal lines. The sampled in (Arab?) vocal parts may sound weird in the beginning but grows onto you quickly. 'The Frontline' comes with a strong and recogniseable riff that mixes excellently with the bashing drums. The vocal lines are recogniseable - on the chorus maybe even a bit close to a sing-a-long attitude - and match exellent with the keylines. 'Fight! Fight!' follows. It's again a more midtempo track, built on a spine of accessable clean vocal lines and bashing drumming. As always the riffing is more than decent, making it another excellent track. 'We Are The Dead' is the most atmospheric track on the release. It comes with hard riffing, repetative keylines/sampling and a high wave attitude. 'The Curse Of Human Kind' is a short piano intermezzo, followed by the title track. It's my personal favorite track, providing an excellent mix of wave and industrial metal. It comes with wellplaced sampling, strong riffing and accessable vocal lines all glued together by the powerful, even danceable drum rhytm. 'Endless Fire' is a heavely electro influenced track, coming with a spine of bashing drums and electro keylines. The addition of the strong but diverse riffing give the song a wave and metal edge. 'I Cry' is a steady downtempo wave/metal track, coming with metal riffing and diverse programming. It comes with a undeniable atmosphere, and again very recogniseable vocal lines. 'Blood Into Wine' is the final track of the record, bringing a surprisingly strong wave edge. It's built on a spine of midtempo drumming and cold keylines, bringing in subtile riffing and wellplaced vocal lines. A wicked but a bit surprising end of this release.
Compared to the 'State of Fear' release, we find a slight change of direction. 'Black Rooster' is more metal based and more straight to your face when it comes to programming and riffing. As well the fact that none of the songs besides 'Blood Into Wine' passes the four minute border contributes to this fact. Furthermore the production shows slight improvements as well - and again all the songs come with a certain (political) message.
So - to sum everything up quickly, another steady release from this Dutch group has been unleashed. People who liked the first two albums can buy this blindly without the risk of a dissapointment, as well people who aren't familiar with this band yet and consider themselves fans of bands such as Ministry, Rammstein, Swamp Terrorists and in common who are in for a wicked new surprise.
