Artist: OMEGA FLARE
Album: A Clockwarp Machinery
Year: 2009
Italy has many many many industrial or electro metal bands hiding under its soil, such as DyNAbyte, No Forgiveness, Neon Synthesis, T3chn0ph0b1a and Digitalis Purpurea. Omega Flare is the newest band that can be added to this long list. Hailing from Bologna, this band moved from one status to another until things became more serious with a brand new frontman and the release of this 'A Clockwarp Machinery' debut EP.
After the atmospheric intro named 'Signal Acquired', the release continues with 'Endorphine Abuse'. It's an accessable track, including recogniseable vocal lines, powerful drumming and variative riffing, all brought together by the somewhat sailing keylines. 'Wreath of Lust' is a more metal based track, with firm old school based riffing (and a very wicked guitar solo), recogniseable vocal lines (including nearly sing-a-long chorusses) and decent midtempo drumming. This song shows tiny wave touches within the keylines. 'Grey' follows. It's a decent gothic metal track, including elements from out of the wave and doom metal corners. It consists of powerful drumming, wellplaced riffing, excellent keylines and male and female vocal lines that have excellent interaction with eachother. 'Artificial Antihuman' is my personal favorite on the release. It's build on strong midtempo drumming and a bouncing bassline, then beeing decorated with diverse vocal lines, wellplaced riffing and essential electronic samples. The release ends with the longest track of them all: 'Deviant Addiction'. It's the most experimental track of them all, moving from heavy riffing and modern electronic samples to wave parts coming with cold keylines all blended together by the accessibility of the vocal lines and drumming.
Although Omega Flare has developed quite a modern sound, we find many old school influences hidden in their music. The clean vocal lines bring up memories to old school heavy metal bands, just a little less extreme, as well the cold keylines show touches of both worlds. The fact that this release comes with an excellent clean production is therefore truely a blessing.
'A Clockwarp Machinery' turns out to be a more than warm introduction of Omega Flare, and I'm already getting curious what they'll come up with in the future. This first release provides an accessable mix of wave and electro with touches of heavy metal, and very rarely even a little thrash metal, that will probably have a positive affection on many other people too.
